I don’t rant on here very often but this needs to be said.
Several of my clients have alerted me of the same situation. They thought they were contacting me through a post on craigslist but in fact it was another broker. Here are a few things you should know.
- I am NOT affiliated in any way shape or form with any one using any email address with myastoriarentals @ gmail, aol, hotmail, etc……… My email address is peteslistings @ gmail . com or peterhorowitz @ myastoriarealestate .com
- I am not to be confused with any person who POSTS in the NO BROKER NO FEE section of craigslist but is clearly a broker. That’s just bad business. It is deceptive and you will never see me do this. If your first contact with your broker is a blatant lie then I’d hate to see how things turn out with them.
- In every advertisement I post you will see my full name spelled out. No nicknames or initials. For example in my listings you will see my info read like this “Peter Horowitz, Licensed Real Estate Broker”. This way it is very clear.
This leads me to elaborate on what has been happening for a long time on craigslist.
Many brokers that post on Craigslist are using deceptive practices and breaking laws on a regular basis with their advertising.
For one thing if a real estate agent post in the “by owner” section of craigslist then they are lying and breaking the law.
Also, NY state law requires that the agents full name and license info.
These should be RED FLAGS to consumers. Do yourself a favor and DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THESE PEOPLE. A good good broker would pay the $10 per ad to be in the proper section on craigslist without even thinking about misrepresenting themselves.
My advice is to research who ever you plan on working with. Work with a reputable broker. Put in the few minutes to at least google them. If you find nothing then they may have not been around too long. Maybe you’ll be pleasantly surprised. Whatever the result may be you will at least know who you are dealing with.
